I am Simin Kazemi, the co-founder and former executive director (2014-2020) of Kavikonj, Iran’s first nature school. My work at Kavikonj focused on providing nature-based education for children aged 3-12. At Kavikonj, we implemented evidence-based methods to facilitate self-directed learning, creating environments where children could intimately interact with natural elements, engage with local plants and animals, and immerse themselves in free play.

I am currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, studying Child Development/Early Childhood Education. I am interested in further exploring the relationship between children’s interactions with nature and their capacity for self-directed learning.
I am also an avid nature wanderer. In my free time, I enjoy doing yoga, hiking, adventuring, and camping in nature.
